It’s been 20 years since the events of the original, and Sy Parrish is out of prison. Releasing on good behavior and deemed a non-threat, the opening scenes see Sy getting into a cab outside of a prison. He returns to the same town the original took place, but not to stay. Only to gather his belongings from a storage shed.
The Yorkin family has also relocated. Sy knows this. We come to find out that he had kept in touch with former coworker/apprentice Yoshi. Yoshi told him the Yorkins had moved, but he didn’t know where. Only that they’ve moved to “the southeastern coast”. Sy believes this to be Charleston, SC, as they’d vacationed there before. He remembered the pictures.
Since Sy went away to prison, photo developers have become almost obsolete, so once in Charleston, he starts a new career as a freelance photographer under a new alias— Will Burson. While pursuing the Yorkins and driving himself crazy with the visions of revenge, Sy finds a new friend. A new companion. A new target. He meets Shelby, played by Emily Blunt.
Suddenly, Sy finds himself falling into the same routine he had before. He follows her, photographs her, covers his apartment with pictures of her. In his pursuit of his new muse, he forgets why he came here in the first place. He’s much more visible around town. One day, Will Yorkin sees Sy at the park where he’s taking pictures of the unsuspecting Shelby. When confronting him, Sy loses his cool and shatters his camera over Will’s head. He ties him up and puts him in the trunk of his car.
Now, Sy knows he has to act fast. He gets the Yorkin address from Will’s ID. Now he has his original targets’ location, with one of them in his possession, and he still has Shelby. The events that unfold are much darker and more violent than years ago. Multiple casualties ensue, and this time Sy won’t have the chance to do this again. Our saga ends with Sy getting shot by the police after a long standoff. The sole survivor here, sadly, is Jakob Yorkin. Will the trauma he’s endured cause him to go down a dark path? This is hinted at as our screen fades to black.
